Ian Araneta


Born as Ian Bayona Araneta on March 2, 1982 in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, this full blooded Pinoy football player, “local Azkal” as people put it, plays as a forward for the Philippine Azkals and a member of the Philippine Air Force FC.

Ian has moved up a long way from his humble beginnings. The eldest of four kids, Ian was born to a teacher and a retired soldier. His dad moreover, used to play football. Ian got hooked on the sport when he was already in grade four. He’s already been with Air Force Riders for ten years. He’s also played for the country’s U-16, U-19, and U-21 squads.

While Ian took up football in the likings of his dad, it furthermore goes down to the rest of his family. In fact, his youngest sister Alina plays in the U-16 and U-19 teams. From among the Azkals, Chieffy Caligdong is Ian’s third cousin, while Yanti Barsales is his uncle. Even in Air Force, he has cousins Harold and Herbert Bayona to keep him company. His four-year-old son Sam is already beggining out in the sport.

Ian made his international debut in December 2002 on a friendly match versus Singapore and scored his first international goal in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers, giving the national side the early lead over Laos. A very strong striker and a constant menace up front with his resolve and determination for goal, Ian scored his first international three-win success during the 2010 Long Teng Cup with a 5-0 win against Macau.
